Waterloo Road - Prom - Lytham Road
The council are making big changes at the junction of the Promenade and Waterloo Road, and Waterloo road and Lytham Road, plus Bond Street.
They are installing a roundabout at the junction of Waterloo Road and Lytham Road which I dont think it needs but hopefully it will look nice and welcoming.
Waterloo Road is having new street lighting, new pavements and traffic calming measures. I also dont think you will be able to turn from the prom into Waterloo Road ( MacDonalds in South Shore is almost on the Corner).
Bond Street is also becoming one way heading South from Waterloo Road to Station Road so more parking can be introduced.
Its all a bit of a mess at the moment but again it should be ready for Summer. Hopefully it will help provide a few more shoppers to Waterloo Road and Bond Street as they are all suffering through lack of shoppers.

I hope it works out if only for the local businesses. They really need all the help they can get and its high time something was done to help them.

I am not aware of a big woolies but there are a few buildings that are big enough and its the sort of location I could imagine a Woolies to be in. There is still an Ethel Austins, Superdrug, Iceland, and lots of small independent retailers and a couple of indoor markets.

There still is a shoe market shop on Waterloo road. I think it is still open as they seem to have demolished the first floor and only the ground floor is open. Mind you I haven't really been to see what is happening for a few days. Can you remember if Woolies was on the road that leads from the prom (Waterloo Road) or the road that runs parallel to prom (Bond Street)? I could try and get some photos if that would help your memory. I am always interested in recent history as it seems the buildings that weren't really special dont seem to have any historic pictures taken. So the last 50 years of Local History gets lost.

Me too. There is a Book in Tesco that actually has a picture of the shop on the corner of my road and you can just see my house in 1898!!!! It looks exactly the same

Yes I remember Woolworths it was there that 'Hartes' shop is now. It closed down a long time ago now and became Browsers then Hartes. It would be good to have a big name back down there though, how about a Tesco Metro or similar.

So thats where it was. Thanks Christian1985. I cant imaging Hartes Christmas shop being a Woolies. The shop is a beautiful building, the display windows on the outside have curved glass on the bays and it must have looked really impressive. I think it dates back to about 1890. It woud be good to get a big name back but Woolies was unique in that as well as goods for locals it had holiday souveneers and that sort of thing as well. I dont think there are any more stores like that anymore
South Shore does have a Tesco Express, on Lytham road just a few meters from the junction with Waterloo road.

There were rumors that Tesco's were buying lots of Woolies stores to make into Tesco Metros but I think the deal fell through.
You have to be careful even in the big Tesco stores as sometimes it is actually cheaper to buy 2 small sizes than 1 big one!!!! They are clever and they change which is cheaper on a weekly basis!!!! So it always pays to check the best buy.
Also did you know that if you are over charged at the till in Tesco and then take the reciept to customer services they will refund DOUBLE the error!!!! Once they charged me for 3 crates of beer and I only had 2. So they refunded me the cost of 2 cases of beer (ie double the error) So I got the 2 crates for FREE!!!!!
